The Temptations (CD2, Tk4)
Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me) (1971)
music and lyrics by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong
lead vocals: Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams; backup vocals: Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and David Ruffin

This track showcases the talents of a classic Motown vocal ensemble. This group held off recording this song until 1971, waiting to redefine themselves away from the socially active material of the late 1960s. This performance is the essence of pop; it is far from psychedelia, funk, or protest. The Temptations dressed and moved in a style reminiscent of the crooners, and love songs were the major topic. Their blending sound shows its influence decades later in the close harmonies of male vocal groups like Take Six. The vocal harmonization pulls heavily from gospel harmony groups heard in the African-American church.
